It is distinct from the Crown Prosecution Service, prosecutorial decision makers and the Judiciary. Inspection does not reopen an individual prosecution or replace legal appeal procedures.
Inspectors require appropriate professional competence, independence and confidential evidence handling. Prosecution decisions remain with competent prosecutors.
